CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS RACK DAMPER (METAL DAMPER BOLT)

1 - SPECIAL TOOLS

[1] dial gauge (-).1505 .

[2] dial gauge extension (-).0720-C .

[3] dial gauge support (-).0720-B .

2 - PRELIMINARY OPERATION

Tighten in a twin-jaw vice :

• the steering mechanism

Remove :

• the collars (1), (2)

Detach the gaiter (3) .

3 - CHECKING THE PLAY

Position the rack at the mid-point .

Remove the cap (5) from the bolt (4) .

Position the tools [1], [2], [3] .

Tighten :

• the bolts (6) finger tight until they touch

WARNING : ensure the dial gauge rod moves freely .

Using an open ended spanner, turn the rack (7) to the stop to ensure contact of the damper (8) on the bolt (4) .

Place the dial gauge to zero in this position .

Release the rack .

While watching the dial gauge :

• turn the valve stem (9) a half turn in relation to the mid-point of the rack, in one direction then the other
• note the value (J) of play indicated

The value (J) of thrust button play must be between 0.01 mm and 0.1 mm .

If the value is incorrect :

• remove the tools [1], [2], [3]
• adjust the steering damper

If the value is correct :

• while watching the dial gauge : read the play value over the rest of the rack travel
• the value (J) of the play at the rack damper should be between 0.01 and 0.15 mm

If the play (J) is incorrect over the rest of the rack travel :

• replace the steering mechanism (steering rack deformed)

If the play (J) is correct over the rest of the rack travel :

• remove the tools [1], [2], [3]
• refit the plastic plug (5)
• lock the bolt (4)
• refit the gaiter (3)

4 - ADJUSTMENT

Tighten the bolt (4) to 2 da.Nm (Use a 6-sided socket) .

Make a mark (A) on the steering unit which tallies with a graduation of the bolt (4) .

Unscrew by 3 graduations .

Check the clearance (J) .

If the play (J) is incorrect, following this first adjustment, :

• tighten or unscrew the bolt (4) by several graduations (use a 6-sided socket) (tighten to reduce the play, slacken to increase the play)
• check the clearance (J)

Repeat this last operation until a play (J) of between 0.01 and 0.1 mm is obtained .
